Unions and their membership continue to face uphill battles in healthcare funding and benefits, in particular, mental health and substance abuse. As we move into an even more uncertain future, we need to take a closer look at how Unions have traditionally used internal as well as local resources (Critical Debriefing Teams, local Self-Help groups, etc.) and our own ingenuity to cover the gaps. This is only one leg of a three prong strategy to continue to assist members and their families struggling with substance abuse issues and other traumatic mental health concerns. Another area is building strategic alliances with providers of substance abuse services, mental health providers, and supportive politicians. We have to use our collective strength through grassroots efforts to impact health care legislation. We must resurrect old models used in the past, such as mentoring and networking. The last prong of the strategy is the continuation of education for Members Assistance Program, joint Labor-Management program EAP programs, and their alliance with local community resources, such as United Fund resources, local crisis centers, local educational resources, ALANON, and Alcoholics Anonymous & others.
