Process Addiction Treatment

Sex. Food. Gambling. The Internet. All of these things, when in moderation, can be enjoyable parts of our lives. But for those who suffer from process addictions, these actions become all-consuming - destroying the addict's personal life, career, and overall sense of happiness. Treatment Solutions Network can help you or your loved one overcome this addictive behavior. Call us today at 877-417-6237.

What is a process addiction?

A process addiction refers to any compulsive behavior that involves an action that, on its own, is not physically addictive - such as shopping or sex. The lack of a physical addiction separates this condition from alcohol abuse and drug addiction, but process addictions can be still very harmful, and should not go untreated.

The list of process addictions is wide-ranging, and can include any day-to-day activity that has become overpowering and destructive in an individual's life. Some common process addictions are sex addiction, compulsive gambling, Internet addiction, shopping addition, and compulsive eating.

Is a process addiction a real medical condition? Shouldn't someone be able to stop this behavior on their own?

Yes, process addictions ARE a recognized psychological condition in the mental health community, and are treated as such. Unfortunately, society as a whole - while aware of the dangers of substance abuse - has yet to truly understand the seriousness of process addictions like compulsive eating or Internet surfing. These issues require immediate, professional intervention.

"In the past, you'd see people chasing the high with heroin or cocaine," Linda Bell, the chief executive of Bellwood Health Services, told the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. "Now, they chase the high with gaming, they chase the high with sex, they chase the high with shopping."

Video games - often viewed a harmless pastime for children and families - are so addictive to some players that the British Psychological Society recently heard evidence of increasing numbers of gaming addicts who are not eating or sleeping properly because of their obsession with playing. There have been reports of marriages ended, obesity, and even deaths caused by video games (a Korean man died of an exhaustion-related heart attack after playing for 50 hours).

This doesn't mean, of course, that anyone who picks up a Nintendo Wii controller will become a full-fledged addict. But these cautionary tales show the importance of treating  process addictions quickly and aggressively.  Treatment Solutions Network is here to help, and there is no charge for our service. Call today at 877-417-6237.

Just because it's invisible doesn't mean it's not life-threatening

Gambling addiction, like many process addictions, is often referred to as an "invisible" addiction. Gambling addicts do not exhibit the beer-soaked breath of an alcoholic, or the needle marks found on the arms of a heroin addict.

Despite the lack of physical warning signs, gambling addiction is deadly serious - for example, gambling addicts typically have a higher suicide rate their either drug or alcohol abusers. Gambling addiction also often leaves the addict's entire family completely bankrupt.

Michael B. lost his Michigan law license - and was sent to prison - after he misappropriated $1.6 million of his clients' money to feed his blackjack and slot machines habit. Michael now travels the country speaking to groups about the dangers of problem gambling, according to Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

Process addictions can often co-exist with substance abuse

Many drug addicts and alcoholics also suffer from process addictions - and those process addictions MUST be addressed as part of an overall recovery strategy. At the treatment centers available through Treatment Solutions Network, this is done through a comprehensive intake and evaluation procedure that identifies all of a client's treatment needs.

The substance abuse problem and the process addiction are then tackled simultaneously - using a two-pronged approach that is similar to the dual diagnosis method of treating mental illness sufferers who also have a problem with drugs or alcohol.
